Mohammed Bashir shortlisted in the Multicultural Business and Community Champion awards
Our very own Mohammed Bashir has been shortlisted in the Multicultural Business and Community Champion awards for his contribution to faith-based foster care.
Mohammed Bashir, 51, registered manager at ACS fostering has been nominated in the ‘professional of the year’ category in the Multicultural Business and Community Champion awards for his ongoing work with vulnerable children and young people.
ACS started 12 years ago after Mohammed noticed faith-based needs were often overlooked for looked-after children.
Mohammed didn’t know he was being nominated for the award and said: “I am humbled and surprised to be recognised by my colleagues but the work we do is all to make a difference to children and young people who need love and support.
“ACS was born to ensure children from a faith background are able to have that very important part of themselves recognised and cared for when in foster care. We are always looking for more foster parents from all backgrounds to provide a caring home for some of our most vulnerable young people.”
ACS promotes the importance of nurturing faith for looked-after children as it can be a fundamental part of their identity and can help children feel more at home if they share a home with a family of the same faith.
Since 2012 Mohammed and his team has focused on raising awareness and recruiting foster parents from communities of faith, and from Black, Asian and mixed-heritage communities to accommodate the shortage of foster parents to meet the needs of those children.
The award nomination recognised Mohammed’s ongoing contribution to children and young people from the creation of the agency, to contributing to research at the University of Coventry, and achieving two consecutive Outstanding Ofsted inspections.
Mohammed said: “I’m looking forward to celebrating with all the other nominees for these awards and appreciate the great sense of community and belonging that we can provide to one another. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to put foster care on the map and celebrate this career and the difference it can make.”
The awards ceremony which ‘celebrates unsung heroes and champions diversity’ will take place on Saturday, 30th November at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham where a judging panel will decide winners in all categories.
